Berg Insight, the world's leading provider of IoT market research, today released new data on the Mobile IoT Gateways and Routers market.

By 2021, more than 4.5 million mobile IoT gateways will be shipped worldwide with a total market value of approximately $1.15 billion. Sales rose 14% year-over-year as demand recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry has also limited the supply of key components such as cell modules and processors, leading to longer lead times. Sales growth continues through 2022, but will slow in 2023 due to tighter economic conditions in key regions. Mobile IoT Gateway's annual revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% through 2026 and reach $2.18 billion by the end of the forecast period.

Mobile IoT gateways include general-purpose routers, gateways, and modems that provide primary or backup cellular connectivity to LAN devices. Over the past few decades, this product category has evolved from simple network devices to device-to-device communications, introducing advanced features for security and edge computing. The market is driven by the growing need to consolidate assets and workforce in remote and temporary locations as companies digitize their operations.

Other vendors with significant market share include Cisco, Sierra Wireless, and Digi International. These five vendors generate $625 million in annual revenue from mobile IoT gateways and routers and account for 54% of the market. Other major vendors are MultiTech, Lantronix, Systech and Casa Systems in the United States; InHand Networks, Peplink, Hongdian, Robustel and Advantech in Asia-Pacific; and HMS Networks, NetModule, Matrix Electronica, Westermo and RAD in the EMEA region.

The European and Asia-Pacific markets are fragmented with a large number of small and medium-sized players generating annual revenues ranging from US$5 million to US$25 million.
